Scrap (Ftlgame-scrap) is the currency and base resource used in FTL universe.

Outside of stores and events scrap can be used to upgrade installed systems and increase the reactor power of a ship.

In stores scrap can be spent on new systems, weapons, drone schematics, augmentations, crewmembers, as well as to purchase resources - fuel, missiles, drone parts - and hull repairs. In stores, however, scrap can also be gained - by selling weapons, drone schematics and augmentations, albeit at half-price (rounded down against player).

Throughout the game a player will come across numerous trading events which allow using scrap to gain a weapon, drone schematic, augmentation, crew, or upgrade systems and ship reactor, or exchanged for resources. However, some trading events allow trading one type of resource for another or to exchange a resource to gain items or other benefits without using scrap. In certain events scrap can be specifically used to gain various benefits or avoid dangers.

The actual amount of scrap received by defeating ships, killing enemy crew, or as reward in different events depends on the Scrap Sector parameter [1]. The game difficulty setting - chosen on the ship selection screen before a game run - affects this parameter so that more scrap is rewarded in all sectors for easier difficulty settings. The actual scrap reward values, depending on the sector number and the game difficulty, can be seen in the tables here: Easy, Normal, Hard.

The sector type can affect the scrap gains as well - that depends on the events which can possibly occur in a particular sector type (e.g. double rewards events), but not in another sector type.[2]

One of the ship achievements for the Lanius Cruiser is called Scrap Hoarder and requires a player to have at least 600 unspent scrap in the storage.
